Chapter 18

RICHARD AWOKE WITH a pounding headache and bound to a chair with ropes. He slowly scanned the room to get his bearings. Based on the droning hum from just outside the door and the slight tossing motion, he deduced that he was still on the Reichswehr’s stolen fishing trawler. But where exactly was a question he couldn’t answer. For all he knew, he could be on his way to Singapore or Sydney.

A half-hour later, a pair of soldiers delivered a plate of food to him consisting of a couple of pieces of bread and an apple along with a glass of water. One of the men removed the bindings and collected them, while the other slid the tray onto a nearby table.

“Can either of you tell me what’s happening?” Richard asked. “Where am I? Where’s Wilhelm?”

They both ignored him and promptly exited, locking the door behind them.

Richard devoured the food and wondered how long he’d been out. He hadn’t realized how hungry he was until he finished eating. Searching around the room, he found little more than some first aid supplies and a mop.

He paced around for a few minutes, contemplating how he might escape given the opportunity. However, a firm knock on the door interrupted his internal deliberations. Without waiting for Richard’s reply, two armed Reichswehr agents entered the room along with Wilhelm.

“You have a funny way of repaying a guy for saving the life of one of your troops,” Richard said.

Wilhelm grunted. “If we’re keeping a ledger, you remain in quite a bit of debt to me, so please dispense with the notion that I owe you any favors. Besides, the biggest favor I’m doing for you right now is keeping you alive.”

“You can always cut me loose and see how I’ll do on my own.”

Wilhelm huffed a soft laugh through his nose. “I doubt you’d want me to toss you overboard right now into the South China Sea. You’d be dead in a few hours unless you possess some superhuman ability to swim miles and miles in the ocean without drowning.”

“How many miles are we talking about?”

Wilhelm waved dismissively at him. “I didn’t come down here to humor you. In fact, I have a very serious question for you.”

“Ask away. I’ve obviously got nothing but lots of free time on my hands since you’ve locked me away here on your ship.”

Wilhelm crossed his arms and leaned against the wall. “How much is the seal of the realm worth?”

“Depends on who you ask.”

“I’m asking you,” Wilhelm said as he glared at Richard.

“I’ve heard anywhere from half a million pounds to five million. I guess at the end of the day, it’s like everything else. It’s worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.”

“And what would you pay for it?”

Richard chuckled. “Well, if I had that type of money as a private collector, I might pay around two to three million for it. But that’s pure speculation.”

Wilhelm clapped his hands and rubbed them together. “Excellent. That’s what I wanted to hear to affirm my decision.
